Data centre

The Newton data centre has expandable space for over 60 rack-frame cabinets over and above the many that are already there. This centre is the hub of our operation and that of over ten other ISPs and hundreds of business networks.

The centre has electrical supply built for expansion including online diesel generation backup, A/C, fire-protection and 24-7 personnel onsite monitoring for security and secure access.

In respect of online UPS provision for racks/servers we have found by experience that there is a dis-economy of scale on their costing and in terms of their function, ie., it is better and lower cost to have a UPS per rack or couple of racks thus having many UPS units rather than relying on a single online-battery-UPS for the whole data centre. The mains-supply downtime before diesel-generator re-establishes supply does not exceed 10 seconds.

Also the data-centre is provisioned with multiple links and suppliers of national and international data thus ensuring security of supply.

In short we have provided backup systems at every step of our networks to secure us in the event of disaster and by doing that, securing the services you have from us.

Rack-cabinet Space Rental Table
Specifications:Space, power-supply, cooling (19-24C) and ethernet connection for standard 19" deep rack with scale of backed-up power consumption. Site secured by 24/7 staffing and monitored 24/7 secure entry/exit provisions.

Power Supply, UPS
The data centre has a backup diesel-generated power supply that has a five-second delay before coming on-stream. This does not strictly qualify this system as a UPS, and KCI therefore retains, in addition - and separate to the backup power supply - UPS provision for all of the KCI and Commspace networks

Even with the generator, individual UPSs are required for the few seconds that the generator takes to start up. KCI therefore strongly recommends to all our co-housed clients that they provision UPS, either their own or on lease from KCI.
